Bessans has announced the start of its Nordic season for 31 October 2026, followed by a free public skiing afternoon on Sunday 1 November. Its S.N.O.W. opening event includes introductory cross-country sessions, giving curious newcomers a chance to try the discipline at the start of the season.
For anyone considering a visit to Bessans in Haute Maurienne Vanoise, the key distinction is that this is an early Nordic opening. It is not an announcement that the resort’s full winter network, or its downhill skiing, is operating.
What is planned for Sunday 1 November?
The official S.N.O.W. programme separates morning elite training from afternoon public access. All times below are local to Bessans.
| Time | Announced activity |
|---|---|
| 08:00–12:00 | Pistes reserved for elite skiers and biathletes |
| 13:00–17:00 | Free public access to the Nordic area |
| 13:30–16:30 | Free introductory cross-country skiing sessions |
| 13:30–17:00 | Ski tests, laser-rifle introduction and equipment sale |
The introductory skiing sessions are advertised without advance registration: visitors are invited to turn up on site. The programme is subject to change, so check the organiser’s latest information before travelling. Free piste access should not be read as a promise that every rental item or other service is included.
How can skiing start before the main winter season?
Bessans uses snowfarming: snow is collected during winter, stored near the biathlon stadium and insulated beneath sawdust through the warmer months. When autumn weather permits, the covering is removed and the preserved snow is spread into an early skiing loop.
The resort describes an initial loop of around 3 km, dependent on favourable conditions. That is a very different proposition from its advertised 120 km winter Nordic network. Its published season dates run from 31 October 2026 to 4 April 2027, but those dates do not establish how much terrain is open on any particular day.
A Savoie News report published on 29 October documented preparations on 28 October for the planned opening. The announcement and preparations support the early-season plan; they should not be mistaken for an independently checked live piste report.
What beginners and families should check
Treat the free introduction as a chance to find out whether cross-country skiing interests you, rather than assuming it replaces a full course. Before setting off, ask where the introductory sessions meet, which ages can participate and whether equipment in the right sizes will be available. Confirm whether you need to arrange hire separately.
Say clearly that you want Nordic or cross-country skiing when asking about equipment or teaching. A general request for “ski lessons” can leave important details unresolved. Ask whether the introduction uses classic or skating equipment, and check the meeting time, clothing advice and arrangements for accompanying adults.
For a later visit, the ESF Bessans profile is a starting point for researching local tuition. Confirm the specific discipline, learner age, teaching language and available dates directly with the provider; a directory listing does not guarantee a Nordic lesson or an available place.
Check the official event page again on the day, alongside current operating and travel information. If planning tuition elsewhere this winter, browse listed ski and snowboard lessons on Find a Ski School and confirm what each course includes before booking.
