Preparing for Your First Ski Lesson

What to expect, what to bring, and how to prepare for your first time on the slopes.

Your first ski lesson is an exciting experience. Here's everything you need to know to be prepared.

What to Wear

  • Base layer - Thermal underwear (avoid cotton)
  • Mid layer - Fleece or softshell jacket
  • Outer layer - Waterproof ski jacket and trousers
  • Socks - Ski-specific socks (one pair, not too thick)
  • Gloves - Waterproof ski gloves
  • Helmet - Mandatory in many resorts (can usually be rented)
  • Goggles or sunglasses - UV protection is essential at altitude
  • Sunscreen - High SPF, even on cloudy days

What to Rent

Most beginners rent equipment:

  • Skis - Your instructor or rental shop will help choose the right size
  • Boots - Ensure a snug but comfortable fit
  • Poles - Usually included with ski rental
  • Helmet - If you don't have your own

What to Expect

  • Your instructor will start with equipment familiarisation
  • You'll learn to walk and balance on flat ground first
  • Snowplough (wedge) position for speed control
  • Gentle slopes only on your first day
  • Lessons typically last 1-2 hours for beginners

Tips for Success

  • Arrive early to get fitted with rental equipment
  • Stay hydrated - Altitude and exercise increase fluid needs
  • Listen to your instructor - They know the best progression
  • Don't compare yourself to others - everyone learns at different speeds
  • Have fun - Falling is normal and part of learning!
