What This Qualification Covers

  • The explicit course remit is leading groups off-piste within ski-area boundaries. Glaciated terrain and mountaineering environments are excluded; the certificate does not establish unrestricted touring or mountain-guide authority.
  • Assessment includes avalanche and mountain awareness, transceiver search, navigation, group leadership, personal off-piste performance, skinning or snowshoeing, and a written paper. These are assessed safety and leadership competences, not automatic legal permission for an itinerary.
  • This named certification is distinct from the complete Level 3 ISIA instructor qualification and from an online Mountain Safety CPD course. Check the underlying instructor qualification, planned activity, and applicable local authorisation separately.

FASS country rules

These are the active qualification conditions configured on FASS. They do not confirm that a person has met them or has permission to teach. Local professional and immigration requirements still apply.

No active FASS rule is recorded for these qualifications. This does not establish permission to teach or lack of recognition.

Training and Progression

  • The dedicated course requires a BASI Level 2 qualification and combines practical, theory, and assessment work. The specification requires attendance throughout the course as well as successful assessment; participation alone does not establish the certification.
  • The Level 4 International Mountain Safety route builds on this certificate through separate training, logged touring experience, and assessment. Level 3 Mountain Safety does not itself establish the later day-touring qualification.
