Telemark skiing · Irish Association of Snowsport Instructors
What This Qualification Covers
- The September 2023 technical criteria assess Telemark stance and movement, straight running, linked basic turns, and control through the core skier-development progression. Piste performance includes rounded wide and shorter turns, active edged turns, and carved Telemark turns.
- Easy-bump assessment includes linked rhythmic turns and absorption matched to the terrain. On easy variable terrain, candidates demonstrate continuous turns and effective balance in chopped-up snow, powder, and other unprepared snow. These are personal technical assessment settings, rather than a published licence to teach or guide clients in those settings.
- The criteria also assess additional technical activities, including one-sided turns without a lead change, turns with the opposite lead, jump turns, and narrow-corridor pivoting. Backwards Telemark turns on easy green terrain are expressly described as course content that is not part of the assessment.
- The readable specification does not define a teaching learner range, a school or supervision requirement, or independent operating rights. Confirm those conditions with IASI for the actual award; do not copy them from Telemark Level 1, Alpine Level 2, or the candidate's technical performance.
FASS country rules
These are the active qualification conditions configured on FASS. They do not confirm that a person has met them or has permission to teach. Local professional and immigration requirements still apply.
No active FASS rule is recorded for these qualifications. This does not establish permission to teach or lack of recognition.
Training and Progression
- IASI's public Telemark page names Level 1 and Level 2 instructor courses, and its conversion information separately names Telemark at Level 2. The September 2023 document provides the Level 2 technical assessment criteria, rather than a complete entry, teaching, or award-completion specification.
- The conversion page requires an application and review of training and certification before entry to a conversion course, with at least one assessment day for Telemark Level 2. That conversion process is distinct from the ordinary course route, whose current prerequisites and full completion requirements need confirmation with IASI.
- A Telemark Level 2 record is separate from an Alpine or snowboard award, a trainer or examiner appointment, and an issued ISIA credential. Neither the technical criteria nor a conversion application establishes professional recognition or work permission in a destination country.
Check the awarding body's current syllabus for entry requirements, course dates, fees, and assessment rules.

IASI's current public Telemark and conversion pages and the four-page Telemark Level 2 Technical Criteria dated September 2023 were read. The source specifies personal technical assessment, including a course-only backwards-skiing task. It does not establish a complete teaching remit, ordinary course-entry requirements, supervision conditions, or professional authorisation.
