Chamonix’s November closure period has begun, with the Aiguille du Midi operator showing the site closed and Montenvers publishing a train closure from 2 November 2026. Visitors planning an autumn mountain excursion or an early ski trip should check the exact installation and date before arranging travel: the return of one service will not mean that every attraction or ski area is open.
Research checked: 2 November 2026. The dates below describe the official notices available when checked. Operating plans remain subject to change.
What the current notices say
The Aiguille du Midi operator’s page displays a closure notice and a reopening date of 19 December. The tourism office’s pedestrian-lift information lists the corresponding closure period as 2 November–18 December 2026. Its published autumn window for Planpraz ended on 1 November.
| Installation | Published information checked on 2 November | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Aiguille du Midi | Operator says closed, with reopening announced for 19 December. | Do not build a November sightseeing day around this cable car. |
| Montenvers train | Operator timetable says closed from 2 November to 4 December inclusive. | Check the new timetable before choosing a December visit. |
| Planpraz gondola | Tourism-office autumn operating window ran through 1 November inclusive. | The autumn timetable is no longer a basis for planning access. |
Local reporting from Chamonix.net, published 29 October, had flagged the end of the autumn operating period on the evening of 1 November. The practical development now is the start of those November closures.
Montenvers: check each part of the visit
The Montenvers operator’s timetable separates the train closure from the gondola and ice cave, for which its notice gives 19 December as the opening date. A train visit and the full excursion should therefore be checked separately.
There are differences between the published pages. The tourism-office summary describes the train-and-gondola closure as running through 5 December and gives 17 December for the cave. The operator’s own notice says the train is closed through 4 December inclusive and gives 19 December for the gondola and cave. Reconfirm the component you intend to use directly with the operator before committing to a reopening-day journey. Neither a headline date nor a ticket description settles the whole itinerary.
Ski-area plans follow a separate calendar
The tourism office’s 2026/27 ski-area opening forecast lists Grands Montets and La Flégère from 28 November, and Brévent and Balme–Vallorcine from 12 December, depending on snow conditions. Those are planned ski-area dates, separate from the excursion notices above. They do not establish that every lift, piste or teaching area will operate.
Before booking tuition, ask the school which location and course it proposes for your dates. Confirm the meeting point, access arrangements, required lift ticket and what happens if the planned opening changes. For children or mixed-ability groups, check each learner’s placement separately rather than treating a resort opening as confirmation of a suitable lesson.
Build an itinerary you can confirm
- Name the service: check the train, gondola, cable car or ski area you actually need.
- Use the correct date: distinguish an inclusive closure end date from a first operating day.
- Check the whole booking: confirm transport, tuition, equipment and any accompanying family excursion individually.
- Keep the terms: save written arrangements and read the provider’s change and cancellation conditions.
For destination and provider discovery, use Chamonix on Find a Ski School. Check the displayed update dates on any forecast or snow information, then consult the operator for current access. Our first-lesson guide can help with preparation once the course is confirmed.
Include your dates, learner ages, ability and language needs in the lesson request when contacting a listed school. Contact and booking options vary by provider, and a listed course does not guarantee availability during a closure period. You can browse listed ski and snowboard lessons to research suitable options.
