Skiing Breckenridge
Five peaks above a Victorian gold-mining Main Street, the highest chairlift in North America at 3,962m, and a season that stretches from November to May. Breck combines serious high-altitude skiing with the feel of a real town.
Terrain by Level
Beginners: Peak 9's lower mountain is beginner heartland — gentle green runs, a dedicated learning area, and a gondola from town that takes you straight to mid-mountain stress-free.
Intermediates: Peaks 7, 8, and 9 are loaded with well-groomed blues. Four O'Clock Run is the longest in Summit County — 3.5 miles winding into town. Peak 7's glades offer sheltered tree skiing.
Advanced: Peak 6 and Imperial Bowl above Peak 8 are where Breck gets serious. Above-treeline terrain is exposed and genuinely challenging. The hike to Lake Chutes rewards with steep couloirs. Find an expert instructor at Breckenridge →
Families: One of the most family-friendly major resorts in Colorado. The town is walkable, the gondola eliminates driving, and the Recreation Centre has a pool and ice rink for non-ski days. See our guide for parents →
Choosing a Ski School
PSIA/AASI-certified with programmes from age 3 to adult. Multi-day children's programmes build strong progression.
- Altitude awareness: Breck's base is at 9,600ft — higher than many resort summits. Good instructors pace you for the altitude on day one.
- Peak 6 introduction: A private lesson to explore the newest, least crowded part of the resort.
- Multi-day kids' camps: 3-day and 5-day programmes produce dramatically better results than single lessons.
Insider Tips
- The altitude is real. Drink water, take breaks, don't ski aggressively on day one.
- The BreckConnect Gondola from town to Peak 8 is free and eliminates parking.
- Four O'Clock Run back to town — 3.5 miles of gentle cruising dropping right onto Main Street.
- For spring skiing (March–May), Breck's high altitude keeps conditions good longer than most Colorado resorts.
- Breck is on the Epic Pass. Combine with Vail, Keystone, and Beaver Creek.
