BASI Alpine Level 3 ISIA

BASI's Level 3 ISIA ski qualification develops lessons from beginner through advanced levels, together with mentoring and training aspiring Level 1 and Level 2 instructors on suitable terrain.

What This Qualification Covers

  • The current qualification description covers learners from beginners to advanced skiers and the development of aspiring Level 1 and 2 instructors. A BASI trainer or examiner appointment remains a separate matter.
  • An ISIA-level qualification describes a professional standard. It does not establish a local licence or unrestricted independent teaching rights.
  • Any off-piste activity must remain within the holder's completed safety training, the school's arrangements, and the local rules.
  • Where recognition relies on the BASI award, keep the relevant teaching licence and professional-development requirements current and confirm suitable liability insurance. Recognition does not itself provide insurance cover.

FASS country rules

These are the active qualification conditions configured on FASS. They do not confirm that a person has met them or has permission to teach. Local professional and immigration requirements still apply.

Further Country Guidance

Qualification recognition and permission to work are separate. Check the destination's professional requirements, your immigration status, insurance, and the employer's requirements before arranging paid teaching. These notes do not confirm an individual's right to work.

United Kingdom

BASI Alpine Level 3 is an advanced teaching award. Match the role, terrain, and insurance to the holder's completed qualifications.

  • Indoor centres, artificial slopes, and mountain schools set their own employment and operating requirements.
  • The qualification does not establish nationality, immigration status, or a legal right to work.

France

BASI Alpine Level 3 alone does not establish authorisation for paid ski instruction in France.

  • An authorised trainee (stagiaire) route has its own entry, school, and supervision conditions. A Level 1, 2, or 3 certificate does not establish that status.
  • Check the professional registration or authorisation required for the proposed activity, including a carte professionnelle where applicable, before paid teaching. School employment does not itself replace that check.
  • Professional recognition and immigration or employment permission are separate checks.

Austria

Check acceptance of BASI Alpine Level 3 in the particular Austrian province and intended teaching role.

  • Identify the province (Land), the employing ski school, and whether the role is supervised, employed, or independent; do not treat Austria as one blanket equivalence decision.
  • In Tyrol, apply to the competent district authority (Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde) for recognition of foreign training for a ski-school teaching role. The application asks for certificates, training and examination details, and professional experience; the recognition decision determines the accepted scope.
  • Tyrol's applicant guidance limits the recognised Anwärter role to pistes. Leading ski tours requires a separate guiding qualification; a numbered BASI or IASI award does not establish that local status by itself.
  • Permission to operate a ski school is separate from acceptance for a teaching job. Check employment and immigration permission independently.

Italy

Confirm the recognition and registration needed for BASI Alpine Level 3 in the destination region or autonomous province.

  • Identify whether the proposed work requires professional recognition, registration, or a temporary-service procedure; check with the competent authority for that destination.
  • Employment by a ski school does not demonstrate that a foreign qualification has been accepted. Confirm that decision before teaching.
  • Do not infer permission for independent work from an instructor level or an ISIA credential. Work and residence permission remain separate.

Switzerland

Check BASI Alpine Level 3 against the intended Swiss role, canton, and terrain; piste instruction and off-piste activities need separate consideration.

  • SERI distinguishes non-regulated teaching from paid high-risk activity outside the area for which lift operators are responsible. Federal qualification recognition is not required for every piste lesson, but cantonal requirements can still apply.
  • SERI's snowsports factsheet identifies additional on-slope rules in Vaud, Valais, Graubünden, and Jura. Vaud also regulates teaching under-18s on piste. Check current requirements with the destination canton; the linked factsheet is dated May 2019.
  • For regulated activity, establishment requires prior qualification recognition. Eligible EU/EFTA-based temporary service providers use a prior declaration and verification procedure for up to 90 working days per year; that is a different arrangement from taking a Swiss employment contract.
  • Off-piste and touring activities require the appropriate safety and guiding scope. An instructor level does not establish unrestricted glacier or mountaineering permission.
  • Work authorisation is separate. SEM distinguishes EU/EFTA short-term employment, British nationals taking Swiss employment (a permit is required), and UK-based temporary service provision. The qualification's issuing country does not establish the instructor's nationality.

Training and Progression

  • The published Teaching course lasts four days and the Technical course five days, each requiring Ski Level 2. The Teaching course recommends completing 200 teaching hours before attending and states that these hours form part of the full Level 3 ISIA qualification pathway.
  • The full award includes supporting requirements beyond either course. BASI's published second-discipline requirement can be met through a Level 1 instructor course in snowboard, adaptive, telemark or cross-country; confirm all current mountain-safety and other completion requirements with BASI.
  • Level 3 ISIA is distinct from the Level 4 International Ski Teacher Diploma and a BASI trainer appointment.

Check the awarding body's current syllabus for entry requirements, course dates, fees, and assessment rules.
