Hakkoda

Hakkoda is not a resort in any conventional sense. It features a single ropeway, no groomed runs, and terrain that feels like backcountry accessed by a lift. With over 50 feet of annual snowfall, a certified guide is non-negotiable for safety and optimal experience.

To reach Hakkoda, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori. The journey from Tokyo typically takes around 3.5 hours.

The skiing at Hakkoda is primarily off-piste, with no groomed runs or marked trails. Strong intermediates with prior off-piste experience can enjoy the open summit plateau, though skiing with a guide is essential due to the challenging terrain and conditions.

Hakkoda is explicitly not suitable for beginners. There are no groomed runs, marked trails, or dedicated beginner infrastructure.

Hakkoda truly comes alive for advanced skiers. It offers an open summit plateau, challenging beech forest descent routes, and incredible depth of snow. Always ski with a certified guide to navigate the complex terrain safely and efficiently.

A must-do après-ski activity is visiting Sukayu Onsen. This 300-year-old bathhouse features one of Japan's largest hiba (cypress wood) baths, offering a unique mixed-gender communal experience.

Hakkoda is renowned for its immense snowfall, often receiving over 50 feet annually. The sheer volume of snow can be so significant that the ropeway station itself is sometimes completely buried.
