Skiing in Kazakhstan is centered around the Tian Shan mountains, with a handful of resorts located near Almaty. The country offers a unique and affordable skiing experience with a developing infrastructure. Shymbulak is the most famous and well-developed resort, offering the highest slopes and longest season.
Alpine skiing was introduced to Kazakhstan in 1937 by Austrian skiers. The Shymbulak ski resort was the first downhill ski route in the Soviet Union. Almaty, a major city, has hosted significant winter sporting events, including the 7th Asian Games in 2011 and the 28th Winter Universiade in 2017.
